Important Style and Cultural Tips for Female Travellers in Summer in Japan
This might be a culture shock to you but the locals dress modestly without revealing too much skin even when it is very hot in summer.
Like I saw a guy wearing a thick denim jacket and pants walking along the busy street in Shinjuku on some random 34°C day in June while I was sweating a bucket wearing a T-shirt and loose pants.
So here are some cultural tips to take note of before you think of what to wear in summer in Japan:
- Modesty matters: Cleavage is rarely shown in Japan.
If you want to wear spaghetti straps, make sure to pair them with a lightweight outer or jacket.
- Layer, layer and layer: Show off your fashion style while covering your arms and legs from the harsh sun rays. Wearing miniskirt? Pair it with thigh-high socks. Spaghetti strap? A lightweight cover up pairing sounds cool.
- Pack easy slip-on shoes: Visitors are typically required to remove their footwear before entering temples, restaurants, or ryokan.
Wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off makes life much easier, especially when you are temple hopping in Kyoto!
- Tattoos are taboo: If you have visible tattoos, just know they are still a bit taboo in some places like onsen or public baths. Fret not, you can easily cover them with tape or just put on a layer!

#BONUS: What NOT to Wear in Japan in Summer
Heavy or Bulky Clothing
- Thick jeans or heavy fabrics
Forget about wearing thick attire like sweatpants and sweaters for your day out in Japan during summer.
You might think you are serving looks, but Japan’s summer heat and humidity will humble you fast.
Bulky boots or high heels
Bulky boots and high heels are a no-go for Japan in the summer unless you are planning for a romantic date night out with your partner.
Between the humidity and endless walking, and the constant shoe removal at the temples, your feet will be begging for mercy before the day even ends.
My suggestion: Bring lightweight, slip-on, non-slip flat covered shoes.
If you absolutely must pack those beloved boots, make them your footwear of choice for a cafe-hopping day since there is not much walking involved 😉
Only Crop Tops or Revealing Clothing
While fashion is diverse in big cities like Tokyo, showing cleavage or a lot of midriff can still feel out of place, especially in more traditional areas or temples.
So cover yourself with a lightweight outer or jacket before heading out!
