FAQs: Private Onsen Kyoto Ryokan

Do all ryokan have onsen?

No, some ryokans do not come with onsen baths. Certain Japanese traditional inns might have communal baths, but that doesn’t mean it is an onsen if the water source is not a hot spring.

Can foreigners go to the onsen in Japan?

While a relatively low number of onsen only accept local guests, there are plenty of onsen in most cities of Japan that welcome foreigners to their facilities. Some onsens are particular with the tattoo visibility and may deny entry to inked guests.

Can couples go to the onsen together?

Onsen in Japan are typically segregated based on gender (male and female). Couples can opt for a private onsen room or reserve the public onsen bath for some privacy when staying at a ryokan.

How long can you stay in an onsen?

It is recommended to soak in the onsen for 1 to 2 times a day. The onsen water temperature is crucial when it comes to determining the soaking duration. Typically, an onsen soak should last about 3 to 10 minutes and increase to 15 to 20 minutes once you are comfortable and get used to the heat.
